One Step Closer to the Big Enchilada
By Frank Rich
The New York Times
To believe that the Bush-Cheney scandals will be behind us anytime soon you'd have to believe that the Nixon-Agnew scandals peaked when G. Gordon Liddy and his bumbling band were nailed for the Watergate break-in. But Watergate played out for nearly two years after the gang that burglarized Democratic headquarters was indicted by a federal grand jury; it even dragged on for more than a year after Nixon took "responsibility" for the scandal, sacrificed his two top aides and weathered the indictments of two first-term cabinet members. In those ensuing months, America would come to see that the original petty crime was merely the leading edge of thematically related but wildly disparate abuses of power that Nixon's attorney general, John Mitchell, would name "the White House horrors."

By Elizabeth de la Vega

Legally, there are no significant differences between the investor fraud perpetrated by Enron CEO Ken Lay and the prewar intelligence fraud perpetrated by George W. Bush. Both involved persons in authority who used half-truths and recklessly false statements to manipulate people who trusted them. There is, however, a practical difference: The presidential fraud is wider in scope and far graver in its consequences than the Enron fraud. Yet thus far the public seems paralyzed.

Robin Hood (1991)
This retelling of the classic tale features Robin Hood (Patrick Bergin) as something less than a shining knight and a kick-butt Maid Marion (Uma Thurman) who can thrust and parry with the best of the Merry Men. Robin is a landowner who gets bilked by a conniving tax collector. In response, Robin forms his cadre of chums and goes after the taxman and other villainous Normans (there are plenty) in this made-for-TV movie.
Starring: Daniel Webb, Conrad Asquith, Barry Stanton, Patrick Bergin, Owen Teale, Jurgen Prochnow, Uma Thurman, Jeroen Krabbe, Phelim McDermott

Refuge drilling added to bill No filibuster is allowed, but hurricane relief is the wild card

Houston Chronicle: WASHINGTON - A Senate committee voted Wednesday to include drilling in an Alaska wildlife refuge in a massive budget proposal, assuring that drilling opponents won't be able to use the filibuster to thwart oil development there.

However, debate over funding for victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita threatened the measure.

The Senate Energy Committee proposal, approved 13-9, calls for the Interior Department to put up for bid by Oct. 1, 2010 two oil leases in the coastal plain of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

There's Something About Mary: Special Edition (1998)
The Farrelly brothers nail the laughs in this hugely popular comedy about a hugely popular girl. Mary (Cameron Diaz) is the ideal girlfriend of every guy she meets, especially frustrated high school suitor Ted (Ben Stiller). But he's got plenty of competition from Matt Dillon and other unexpected rivals. This special edition disc includes the original theatrical version and a new extended version with 15 minutes of extra footage.
Starring: Cameron Diaz, Ben Stiller, Matt Dillon, Lee Evans, Chris Elliott, Lin Shaye, Jeffrey Tambor, Markie Post, Keith David, W. Earl Brown, Sarah Silverman, Khandi Alexander, Willie Garson
Director: Bobby Farrelly, More

Strange Days (1995)
Ex-cop Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes) is a pusher of potent -- and illegal -- virtual-reality clips, peddling sex, murder and violence to the masses in quasi-futuristic Los Angeles. But when a high-profile murder shows up in his collection, Lenny is snared in a fast-paced manhunt. With the help of his friend Mace Mason (Angela Bassett), he stays ahead of danger and tries to protect an old flame (Juliette Lewis).
Starring: Ralph Fiennes, Angela Bassett, Juliette Lewis, Tom Sizemore, Michael Wincott, Vincent D'Onofrio, Glenn Plummer, Brigitte Bako, Richard Edson, William Fichtner
Director: Kathryn Bigelow

- LAST NIGHT -

The Mask of Zorro (1998)
This action-adventure remake features Catherine Zeta-Jones's breakout performance as the daughter of the imprisoned and long-forgotten masked hero. When Zorro (Anthony Hopkins) escapes from jail bent on revenge, he begrudgingly chooses a successor (Antonio Banderas) who needs charm school as much as sword practice to pull off the guise. The film's mix of fast-paced action, star power, romance and humor made it a huge box office draw.
Starring: Antonio Banderas, Anthony Hopkins, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Stuart Wilson
Director: Martin Campbell

When they meet a pill-popping actress (Geneviève Bujold) who hopes to have children, both men spiral into madness and addiction. David Cronenberg's script and direction mix high-tech camera work with old-fashioned suspense to create a tangible sense of lunacy and compulsion.
Starring: Jeremy Irons, Genevieve Bujold, Heidi Von Palleske, Barbara Gordon, Shirley Douglas, Stephen Lack, Nick Nichols, Lynne Cormack, Damir Andrei, Miriam Newhouse
Director: David Cronenberg

Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace & Music (1970)
Woodstock
The director's cut of Michael Wadleigh's Oscar-winning documentary restores 40 minutes of footage snipped from the original 1970 release. With the help of a young editor named Martin Scorsese, Wadleigh not only chronicles Woodstock's memorable music and legendary artists, he also captures the festival's dauntless free spirit. The DVD features live performances from, among others, Jimi Hendrix; the Who; Janis Joplin; and Crosby, Stills and Nash.
Starring: Richie Havens, Joan Baez, Roger Daltrey, John Entwistle, Pete Townshend, Keith Moon, Joe Cocker, Arlo Guthrie, Graham Nash, Stephen Stills, David Crosby, Ten Years After, Alvin Lee, John Sebastian, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, Grace Slick, Johnny Winter
Director: Michael Wadleigh

MOVIES --

- TONIGHT -

What's Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)
Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp) lives in a backwater Iowa town and is "man of the house" to his retarded brother, Arnie (Leonardo DiCaprio, who's never been better), a couple of sisters and his dangerously overweight mother. Despite all the crushing responsibility, Gilbert perseveres. But will he ever be able to live his own life?
Starring: Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio, Juliette Lewis, Mary Steenburgen, Darlene Cates, Laura Harrington, Mary Kate Schellhardt, Kevin Tighe, John C. Reilly, Crispin Glover
Director: Lasse Hallström

Body Heat (1981)
A movie hot enough to melt paint. Ambulance-chasing lawyer Ned Racine (William Hurt) falls for femme fatale Matty Walker (Kathleen Turner), who's married to the richest man in town. Clearly derived from Double Indemnity, Body Heat scores with style: It's a steamy, adult update of classic film noir. John Barry's seductive score adds to a film already dripping with atmosphere.
Starring: William Hurt, Kathleen Turner, Richard Crenna, Mickey Rourke, Ted Danson
Director: Lawrence Kasdan

Survivor's Guide to the Energy Crisis
By Jeremy Rifkin, The Boston Globe
...It appears that the president and his team do not understand the enormity of the energy crisis facing the United States and the world. The White House clearly needs guidance. The president should download the just published European Union Green Paper on Energy Efficiency ( europa.eu.int/comm/energy/efficiency/index_en.htm ). The paper lays out a detailed survivor's guide, a roadmap of what every individual, family, community, and country - including the United States - can do to cushion the cost shock of rising oil prices...

Starhawk: Who Will Take Out the Garbage: A Report from New Orleans
It's like a scene out of a post-apocalyptic movie--a crowd of people gathered in the street outside the local tavern in the Bywater district of the Ninth Ward. The lower Ninth Ward, a few blocks away, is the scene of the worst destruction, but this eclectic neighborhood, one of the centers of alternative culture in New Orleans, has fortunately escaped heavy damage. Still, roofs are off, houses are molding away from the inside, and the streets are piled with garbage that, six weeks after the hurricane, has not been picked up...

Butterfly (2000)
Living in an ancient redwood tree for over two years to prevent the tree from being clear-cut, Julia Butterfly Hill captured our hearts and minds by showing us that one person can make a difference. Through interviews with Hill, filmmaker Doug Wolens paints a portrait of an intensely spiritual and articulate woman who encountered both beauty and horror (she was assaulted by lumber company helicopters at one point) during her time above ground.

The Heat Death of American Dreams
...To imagine what it might be like is to invite charges of fear mongering, because it violates the scientific ethos of caution, restraint, and neutrality, the political and cultural norms of can-do optimism. But we've reached the point now where we have to start envisioning what we will face. We have to see the data and projections in human terms, if we hope to be ready for what our children and their children will have to endure. We have to start thinking clearly about what the numbers might mean...

Who Isn't against Torture?
"Let's be clear: Mr. Bush is proposing to use the first veto of his presidency on a defense bill needed to fund military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan so that he can preserve the prerogative to subject detainees to cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment. In effect, he threatens to declare to the world his administration's moral bankruptcy." - The Washington Post

Nobel Prize Slaps Bush Nuke Policy
Last week, the International Atomic Energy Agency and its chief, Mohamed ElBaradei, won the 2005 Nobel Peace Prize for their efforts to stop the proliferation of nuclear weapons. The award was a slap at George W. Bush, who had pressed for ElBaradei's removal just months before. It was also a blow to Bush's policies of dealing with nuclear issues unilaterally, and the US focus on non-proliferation to the exclusion of disarmament - both of which are required by the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

Reclaiming the American Legacy of Civil Disobedience
TO's Sari Gelzer offers that one thing all Americans can do about their desire to see change in America is practice civil disobedience. This flavor of action is not just for radicals. Civil disobedience is the role of citizens within the political system and has a much broader legacy than one was taught to think. Civil disobedience, practiced by various movements of people, has been responsible for forcing politicians to comply with the demands of its citizens. Civil disobedience is how "slavery was ended, civil rights were won, it's how women won the right to vote, and it's how Vietnam ended," says Anthony Arnove, a writer, editor and activist based in New York.

Braveheart (1995)
Combine the pathos of Mad Max with the epic battle scenes and machismo of Gladiator, and you'll get a sense of Braveheart's power. Mel Gibson directed and stars in the full-throttle telling of the story of rebel Scottish warrior William Wallace and his fierce battle to rid Scotland of a tyrannical English ruler. Mythmaking at its best, Braveheart picked up Oscars for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography and more.
Starring: Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan, Catherine McCormack, Angus MacFadyen, Brendan Gleeson, David O'Hara, Ian Bannen, James Robinson, James Cosmo, Sean McGinley, Brian Cox, Tommy Flanagan

History's Mysteries: The True Story of Braveheart (2005)
While Mel Gibson's sprawling Scottish epic Braveheart earned plenty of accolades from moviegoers (and from Oscar), the film's loose portrayal of historical events wasn't as popular among well-read scholars. This installment of A&E's "History's Mysteries" series dissects the truth -- and myth -- surrounding the legendary William Wallace, from his victory against King Edward I at Falkirk to his eventual execution in 1305.

Braveheart, film score
Composed by James Horner
Performed by James Horner / London Symphony Orchestra / Sue Mallet with James Horner, Michael Taylor, Michael Taylor, Tony Hinnegan, Tony Hinnegan
Conducted by James Horner
Editorial Reviews -
A 1996 Academy Award nominee for Best Dramatic Score, Braveheart is one of composer James (Titanic) Horner's most accomplished works. Utilizing the full range of the London Symphony Orchestra, the Choristers of Westminster Abbey, and a small ensemble of traditional folk instrumentalists, Horner largely eschews the bombast typical of the genre and cuts a more emotionally complex--and satisfying--musical course through this 14th-century tale of betrayal and rebellion. This album presents ample evidence of why Horner is currently at the peak of his profession. --Jerry McCulley
Ancient and moving score, October 8, 2002 - Reviewer: David P Henreckson (Mundelein, IL) - There are some movies which are simply musical gold mines. For the most part, these tend to be historical or epic movies like Ben Hur or Gone With the Wind. And certainly Mel Gibson's Braveheart presented such a golden opportunity to composer James Horner. Fortunately, Horner turned out to be excellent at mining the gold from this musical mine. From the opening track, the discerning listener will understand that Horner is trying to produce a romantic, melancholy, and almost mystical atmosphere. The strings intertwine to create a sense that this legendary story of honor and freedom is being lifted out of an ancient mist. Then the mystic drone of the bagpipe is heard, and it is at this point that anyone with a true soul begins to break down. It is very rare that music can really touch the soul; it is even rarer for a soundtrack to do so. For all its greatness, a John Williams score is generally too boisterous to pierce to the heart. But Horner knows not only how to excite the senses with the drumbeats and battle-horns of war, but also how to arouse the long-forgotten desire to live a legend. In the end, it is very hard to resist the desire to don a kilt and rush, sword drawn, at some modern-day tyrant. In this way, Horner's Braveheart is a masterpiece.

will have to dig up some traditional pipe music... the only time i ever saw it peformed live, with young girls dancing, i cried - lifted out of an ancient mist, you might say... guess its in me blood

Remove All Torturers from Power

The Bush administration and those who support the Iraq war frequently justify it by saying that Saddam Hussein tortured his people. They say that Iraq is better off without him. I agree that Saddam needed to go, but with the reports from Abu Graib and other US run prisons it is clear that the Iraqi people are still being tortured.

"...After a couple of years and a constant turnover of musicians, he met his soulmate in Eric Clapton, who had quit the Yardbirds in favor of playing the blues. This historic union culminated in the first hit album for the Bluesbreakers and resulted in worldwide legendary status...

"After Clapton and Jack Bruce left the band to form Cream, a succession of great musicians defined their artistic roots under John's leadership, and he became as well known for discovering new talent as for his hard-hitting interpretations of the fierce Chicago-style blues he'd grown up listening to. As sidemen left to form their own groups, others took their places. Peter Green, John McVie and Mick Fleetwood became Fleetwood Mac. Andy Fraser formed Free, and Mick Taylor joined the Rolling Stones. As Eric Clapton has stated, "John Mayall has actually run an incredibly great school for musicians...."

- LINK OF THE DAY -

The Coming Starvation In America
The government of the United States, by Law was to always maintain a three year mixed- grain survival storage for every man, woman, and child in the United States. Like most Laws of the land, the politicians never took heed as to why our wise ancestors had this reserve requirement established. It was to make sure, that, in the time of a National Emergency, the people had the most important mainstay needed for survival individually and as a Nation. Remember, the people make the Nation, the Nation does not make the people. In the 1960's and 1970's the different political administrations of Washington, D.C. walked away from sanity and started to give the surplus grains which where in elevator storage all over the country, to other nations, such as the Soviet Union, India, etc.. Greens put heat on oil firms
New Zealand Herald (New Zealand)
The Green Party is challenging oil companies to absorb the next price spike and not pass it on to motorists.
...Ms Fitzsimons said her challenge to New Zealand oil companies was: "Tighten your belts first, as we have all had to, rather than trying to maintain your very healthy profits by raising prices before the spike has reached your bottom line..."
