Japanese Story (2003)

During a field trip, geologist Sandy (Toni Collette) has the unfortunate luck of being marooned in the Pilbara desert with a man she can't stand. Finding him completely irritating and rather egotistical, Sandy soon learns that his feelings for her are just as contemptuous. The saying that things can only get better doesn't apply to these two, as their increasingly remote location only adds to the already challenging situation.

track of the day:
Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys - Who Knows [track 1]
Recorded on New Years Eve 1969/70, Filmore East

Amazon.com Essential Recording -
Tired of the showboating image that his early live performances had saddled him with--and that his black audience viewed as demeaning and degrading to his musical talent--Hendrix dissolved his Experience in 1969 in search of a more terra-firma-grounded, blues-oriented persona. On New Year's Eve, Hendrix, his old Army buddy bassist Billy Cox, and ex-Electric Flag drummer Buddy Miles performed a loose, jam-filled set at New York's Fillmore East (completists will want the panoramic though uneven Live at the Fillmore East). Released a few months after his New Year's Eve 1970 concert, Band of Gypsys underscored Hendrix's desired return to basics--even if his basic was at a level most guitarists could never attain in a lifetime of playing. --Billy Altman

The Conversation (1974)
Gene Hackman set the standard for 1970s film acting with his portrayal of Harry Caul, a surveillance expert obsessed with his privacy. A past mistake -- and the fear that he may repeat it -- haunts Caul. The Conversation benefits from tremendous supporting performances (especially that of the late, great John Cazale), excellent use of San Francisco locales and Walter Murch's sound editing.

Network (1976)
Paddy Chayefsky predicted today's rash of trash television and shock-laden news broadcasts. The writer of Marty created network news anchor Howard Beale (Peter Finch), who loses his mind on the air. Unfortunately, his outrageous rants boost the ratings and intrigue cutthroat network executives Faye Dunaway and Robert Duvall. No Quarter
performed by led zeppelin

Close the door, put out the light.
You know they won't be home tonight.
The snow falls hard and don't you know?
The winds of Thor are blowing cold.
They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through.
They choose the path where no-one goes.
They hold no quarter.
Walking side by side with death, The devil mocks their every step
The snow drives back the foot that's slow, The dogs of doom are howling more
They carry news that must get through, To build a dream for me and you
They choose the path where no-one goes.
They hold no quarter. They ask no quarter.
The pain, the pain without quarter.
They ask no quarter.
The dogs of doom are howling more!

Conspiracy Theory (1997) {tonight} [conspiracies & mind control]
Absolutely one of my all time favorites...
Unhinged New York City cabbie (and former intelligence agent) Mel Gibson has a million crazy theories about the "they" behind nearly everything bad that happens. Unfortunately for him and for the Justice Department lawyer he's been harassing (Julia Roberts), one of his crazy theories is right, and "they" want to silence Gibson -- permanently. Patrick Stewart costars in this underappreciated thriller.
Starring: Mel Gibson, Julia Roberts, More
Director: Richard Donner

Hotshot Washington lawyer Robert Dean (Will Smith) becomes a victim of high-tech identity theft when a hacker slips an incriminating video into his pocket in this Tony Scott-directed thriller. Soon, a rogue National Security Agency surveillance team (headed by Jon Voight) sets out to destroy him. Gene Hackman more or less resurrects his character from The Conversation [see 050723l], the 1970s classic concerned with similar themes.

MUSIC --

Houses of The Holy
eview @ bmgmusic.com -
"Houses of the Holy" follows the same basic pattern as "Led Zeppelin IV", but the approach is looser and more relaxed. Jimmy Page's riffs rely on ringing, folky hooks as much as they do on thundering blues-rock, giving the album a lighter, more open atmosphere. While the pseudo-reggae of "D'Yer Mak'Er" and the affectionate James Brown send-up "The Crunge" suggest that the band were searching for material, they actually contribute to the musical diversity of the album. "The Rain Song" is one of Zep's finest moments, featuring a soaring string arrangement and a gentle, aching melody. "The Ocean" is just as good, starting with a heavy, funky guitar groove before slamming into an a cappella section and ending with a swinging, doo-wop-flavored rave-up. With the exception of the rampaging opening number, "The Song Remains The Same," the rest of "Houses of the Holy" is fairly straightforward, ranging from the foreboding "No Quarter" and the strutting hard rock of "Dancing Days" to the epic folk/metal fusion "Over The Hills And Far Away." Throughout the record, the band's playing is excellent, making the eclecticism of Page and Plant's songwriting sound coherent and natural. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Recorded July 27, July 28 and July 29, 1973 at Madison Square Garden, New York (musical parts).

The recording of the film took place during a 3-night concert stand at New York's Madison Square Garden in 1973 during the band's Houses of the Holy tour. The film premiered on October 21, 1976 at Cinema I in New York. The video of the film was released on October 25, 1990 and the DVD was released on December 31, 1999.

Remember the Titans (2000)
It looks like fourth down and long yardage when Denzel Washington replaces a well-respected -- and white -- football coach (Will Patton) in a Virginia high school rampant with prejudice, circa 1970. Not to be discouraged, Washington welds the young players, the Titans, into a force to be reckoned with on the gridiron and off. Based on real-life events.

Willow (1988)
A dwarfish "Nelwyn" named Willow finds a baby adrift in a river and must protect it from an evil queen (Jean Marsh) bent on its destruction. Along with studly Madmartigan (Val Kilmer), Willow battles dragons and vanquishes evildoers, all the while shielding the infant from harm. Taken for what it is, the movie's a tribute of sorts to another film starring a diminutive hero, Lord of the Rings.
<<<<< i don't know who wrote that, but Willow was around long before LOR [and "taken for what its is" is just really lame], unless you are talking about the books... [maybe books are something i should add to RS? / i that case it would be best books/movies = Shogun = more on that later!]

The NeverEnding Story (1984)
Die Unendliche Geschichte
A young boy, harassed by schoolyard bullies, holes up in the school's attic with an extraordinary book about an amazing universe filled with rock-eating creatures, racing snails and flying dragons. Director Wolfgang Petersen's (Das Boot) first English-language film is a wonderful fantasy with a timeless and fundamental message. The movie was so successful that it spawned a couple of live-action sequels and an animated TV series.

I see the bad moon a-rising.
I see trouble on the way.
I see earthquakes and lightnin'.
I see bad times today.
Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.
I hear hurricanes a-blowing.
I know the end is coming soon.
I fear rivers over flowing.
I hear the voice of rage and ruin.
Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.
All right!
Hope you got your things together.
Hope you are quite prepared to die.
Looks like we're in for nasty weather.
One eye is taken for an eye.
Well, don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.
Don't go around tonight,
Well, it's bound to take your life,
There's a bad moon on the rise.

My head's in Mississippi

I'm shufflin' thru the Texas sand,
but my head's in Mississippi.
I'm shufflin' thru the Texas sand,
but my head's in Mississippi.
The blues has got a hold of me.
I believe I'm gettin' dizzy. (Spoken: Help me now.)
I keep thinkin' 'bout that night in Memphis,
Lord, I thought I was in Heaven.
I keep thinkin' 'bout that night in Memphis,
I thought I was in Heaven.
But I was stumblin' thru the parking lot
of an invisible seven eleven. (Spoken: What was I doin out there?)

Where's my head baby?
Somewhere in Mississippi.
Last night I saw a cowgirl.
She was floatin' across the ceiling.
And last night I saw a naked cowgirl.
She was floatin' across the ceiling.
She was mumblin to some howlin' wolf
about some voodoo healin'. (Spoken: Mmm Baby.)

THOUGHTS ---

copyright stuff -
typing back & forth with GD about copyright stuff... he has some good
points that i will take under consideration. making his living as a
pro writer, i can definitely appreciate his concerns, and agree - he
was very accommodating and, i think, really appreciates where i am
coming from. the converstation continues.

insomnia/chronic pain syndrome/severe & critical conditions -
from a note tonight to DS/cc'NP: never made it to that party. i was
all ready to go out the door, dressed up & all, but had just finished
trimming my beard... all that extra moving around of my head/chin did
a total number on my neck and i had to just say, at the very last
minute: i can't do it! ...i finally had the "next" consultation on
Thursday, and she was really good. did you know the MRI results? i
do have a blown out disc... so: she was on the fence whether to go
straight to surgery or try other methods; ended up saying "i'd prefer
to take the more conservative approach" and start with an epidureal
[anti-inflammatory shot] and some physical therapy. so now i move
into the next stage of the process - need to see the next doctor,
schedule PT, etc., but overall: i am a bit better than i was - not
in the 24/7 severe muscle spasm/excruciating pain mode... am able to
sleep a little now.
