oh! and i just heard about this one - a new movie by Werner Herzog - can't wait!

- Grizzly Man -

-- Netflix --
Grizzly Man (2005)
Renowned nonfiction director Werner Herzog chronicles the tragic and untimely death of outdoorsman Timothy Treadwell, who devoted his life to studying grizzly bears living in the Alaskan wilderness -- only to have one of them maul him to death. Pieced together mainly from Treadwell's own video footage, this fascinating documentary goes deep into the wilderness of one man's mind to uncover how he spent his final days.
Starring: Amie Huguenard, Timothy Treadwell
Director: Werner Herzog

-- New York Times --
Grizzly Man
Starring: Timothy Treadwell, Amie Huguenard, Warren Queeney, Willy Fulton, Sam Egli
Directed by: Werner Herzog
REVIEW SUMMARY
One rainy afternoon in the Alaskan wilderness in 2003, a self-made man named Timothy Treadwell was mauled and eaten by a grizzly bear. It may be that the animal, a scrawny male about 28 years old and 1,000 pounds, was trying to fatten up in preparation for its winter's sleep. As it happens, Treadwell, who achieved minor celebrity as an expert on grizzlies, had pitched his tent in a feeding ground. The strange story of Timothy Treadwell, a Long Island native who came to see himself as some kind of ursine Dr. Dolittle, only to die at 46 from a bear attack, is the subject of this documentary from Werner Herzog. The director has a fondness for stories about men who journey into the heart of darkness, both without and within — men like the deranged 16th-century explorer in "Aguirre, the Wrath of God" and the early-20th-century esthete in "Fitzcarraldo" who hauls a steamboat up a mountain to bring Caruso to the Peruvian jungle. Treadwell's journey was no less bold or reckless than these earlier Herzogian tales and certainly no less enthralling. — Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

Date: Wed, 24 Aug 2005 23:06:37 -0700
To: "Carl f. Worden
From: STRIDER
Subject: Re: Life
Cc: /RENEGADE/

it was not so long ago that science and religion were one and the same; i fear they should become one again in this day and age, given the corruption in all arenas...

Carl said:
>Consider this: If life was spontaneously created in some primordial soup that was struck by lightning and blasted by a tornado into a living cell, does this not suggest God does not exist, and therefore there is no Creator who can hold His created responsible for what they do?

i replied:
hey there, Carl.

i just gotta' comment on this one.

my father, may he rest in peace, enlightened me to a very interesting concept when i was quite young; and it is this: the two theories do not contradict one another! get your mind around that!

my interpretation would be this:

as far as the scientists are concerned, they have pretty much figured out how things Evolved, how some of this stuff works [within OUR limited capabilities] - and no! they cannot say how Life actually got started for sure, or recreate it [they will agree with this statement]; and let us just say that the Hand of God reached down with "the spark" that got it all started [chemically -electrically- spiritually - all down with the "raw materials" !!! they are all the same you see ] - and it all evolved from there - all according to "His Plan," and evolution occurred just as our scientists say (understanding this within our limited capability to understand of _any of this) - - - so the whole Adam & Eve thing being set down in The Garden is a metaphor, you see - i am sure you have heard that before - and that's religion: all allegory and metaphor, a story-telling. Faith, of course, is a different matter - that relates more to how people react to what they believe. Religion is a way for us to understand, make sense of our lives and apply ourselves, to pass on knowledge, just as Science is a way for us to understand, etc. Faith is where we shall find morality; again - thats a different matter.

this all, in fact, is how we evolved to be who we are now, in this place and time = we are fortunate to have both faith- and scientific-based views upon this world we are living in, utilizing our imaginations and skills through both "scientific" and "spiritual" means. i believe that this is how we evolved to be who we are. the separation of religion and science are fairly new when it comes to human evolution! [please see final note below!]

Ringu (1998)
Based on the book by Koji Suzuki, this earlier Japanese version of the hit American movie The Ring is creepy in the extreme. After watching a mysterious videotape, a group of teenagers die … gruesomely. The video becomes an urban myth. But an insidious force points a deadly finger at unwary souls unable to resist their curiosity -- people such as Reiko, a journalist who's unwillingly drawn into a nightmare by the unseen threat.
Starring: Nanako Matsushima, Miki Nakatani, More
Director: Hideo Nakata

The Ring (2002) "American Version"
It sounded like just another urban legend...
- - one of the reviews on this movie's netflix page: "The Ring" is the best American horror movie since Kubrick's "The Shining". After seeing the botched mess that Gore Verbinski made of "The Time Macine", I was leary about seeing what he'd done to "The Ring". I haven't seen the Japanese original, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I was not disappointed. This is the movie that "Feardotcom" was trying to be, but failed miserably. Other than two or three drops of blood, there is absolutely no gore in this movie. This movie drags out the suspense to the point where you find yourself squirming almost uncontrollably. Don't be fooled by the PG-13 rating - don't take your kids to see this if they're younger than say, 17, unless you want to scare the bejeebers out of them and scar them for life. I'm not kidding. I saw this two days ago, and I've still got images running thru my head. My office overlooks an empty field, very similar to the Shelter Mountain Camp that's used in the movie - and it's creeping me out. I'm glad there's no well out there, otherwise I might have to move to a different desk. I can't say anything more, because I don't want to give any plot details away. Just go see it, and be prepared to have this movie haunt for quite a few days.

Ju-on: The Grudge (2003)
A house with a terrifying secret is the setting for this Japanese horror film. A young nurse arrives at the house to find that two brutal murders have taken place there, and now the house is cursed, set to exact revenge on any and all who set foot inside it. Soon, the nurse may be the next in a long line of bloody deaths at the hands of the vengeful spirits who out to make things right, once and for all. Stars Megumi Okina and Misaki Ito.
Starring: Megumi Okina, Misaki Ito, More
Director: Takashi Shimizu

- see also:
The Grudge (2004) "American Version"
Sarah Michelle Gellar stars - also Directed by Takashi Shimizu [nice!]
- - one of the reviews on this movie's netflix page:
I wont be watching this movie again. Not because it was bad, but because it was terrifying! Let me start by commenting on the story. There wasnt really a great story here, but it didnt NEED one. The whole point of these movies are to scare you. This movie does just that, and does it well. I am NOT an easily scared person. The only other movie I still cannot watch alone is the Exorcist (I watched it when I was 6 and am scarred for life)! I will add this movie as a close 2nd, but thats a different type of scarey. These are the only 2 movies ever that have actually scared me. This movie does its job. I have heard people say it was hokey and they laughed through it, just didnt give it a chance. Its a VERY good horror movie. Definitely worth paying to see in the theater. You just wont see me there!!

Audition (2000)
"Odishon"
Director Takashi Miike fashions an explosive drama in Audition. Shigeharu Aoyama (Ryo Ishibashi) has lived as a widower for too long and decides it's time to marry again. But how will he find a wife? When a friend suggests he hold a fake audition to pick the right woman, he takes him up on it -- only to realize that his choice may be a better actress than he bargained for.
Starring: Ryo Ishibashi, Eihi Shiina, More
Director: Takashi Miike

- NO QUARTER -

listening to Tool's version of No Quarter [album = Salival]
- one of my all time favorite Led Zepplin tunes...

toolband.com

google "Led Zepplin"

<<< more on "No Quarter" below in THOUGHTS >>>

lyrics of No Quarter [Led Zepplin] -

Close the doors, put out the light
You know they won't be home tonight
The snow falls hard and don't you know
The winds of Thor are blowing cold
They're wearing steel that's bright and true
They carry news that must get through
They choose the path where no-one goes
They hold no quarter,
They ask no quarter.
Walking side by side with death
The devil mocks their every step
The snow drives back the foot that's slow
The dogs of doom are howling low
They carry news that must get through
To build a dream for me and you
They choose the path where no one goes
They hold no quarter, they ask no quarter.

lyrics of No Quarter [Tool] -

Lock all the doors, kill the lights.
No one's coming home tonight.
The sun beats down and don't you know?
All our lives are growing cold, oh...
They bring news that must get through.
To build a dream for me and you, oh.

Locked in a place where no one goes.

They ask no quarter
They have no quarter.

Lock the door, kill the light
No one's coming home tonight

It's getting colder [7x]
Locked in a place where no one goes.

Lock the door, kill the light
No one's coming home tonight

They bring news that must get through.
Dying peace in me and you

Locked in a place where no one goes.

We have no quarter
We have no quarter
We ask no quarter

THOUGHTS --

what does "No Quarter" mean ???

- from worldwidewords.org -

GIVE NO QUARTER

[Q] From Carl: “Recently, I had a person ask me the etymology of to give no quarter. What bothers me is that I can find no rationale for connecting quarter in its sense of one-fourth to its meanings of living space or accepting the surrender of a vanquished enemy.”

[A] The idiom is certainly odd. So far as I can understand, it’s the result of a series of shifts in meaning and the growth of various idioms which took place in the period from late medieval times into the seventeenth century.

In the fourteenth century, quarter added to its basic meaning of the fourth part of something by taking on a sense of one of the four principal divisions of the horizon or the points of the compass. It then seems to have transferred to one of the four quarters of a city, in particular one occupied by a specific group (as we might still today speak of “the French quarter”), not literally meaning one fourth of the area, but a rough direction based on the four main compass points. The same meaning was applied to one section of an army camp. So quarter came to have attached to it the idea of an area in which one lived, and further shifts of meaning seem to have taken place that lead to quarters (in the plural) for one’s living accommodation, especially in military contexts.

There seem to have been one or two further stages. By the 1590s an idiom to keep good quarters with had grown up, meaning to have good relations with a person, presumably a reference to the need to stay on good terms with those living with or around you—Shakespeare used it in The Comedy of Errors in 1590 in a way that showed he was having fun with an expression already well known. So to give no quarter might have meant “don’t show any friendliness to the enemy”. It’s possible also that to give quarters could refer to the need to provide prisoners with a place to stay, so that to give no quarter was a figurative way of saying “take no prisoners”.

It’s all a bit obscure from this distance, but the essence of it seems to be there.

No Quarter by Led Zeppelin

Songfacts:  You can leave comments about the song at the bottom of the page.
"No quarter" is a pirate phrase meaning "no mercy." It could also refer to the US Revolutionary War when Great Britain enforced a policy requiring colonial Americans to house British soldiers and offer them food and a bed during the cold of winter. If this policy was refused to a British soldier, this "No Quarter" policy allowed the British soldier to invoke severe punishment (death, sometimes) on the American who refused him. This was only one of the many ways in which Britain attempted to legitimize their treatment of Americans in their effort to interrupt their recapture of the colonies. (thanks, Andy - Lubbock, TX)
The title was used as the name of the Page and Plant reunion album in 1995.
This was a showcase song for bass player John Paul Jones during Led Zeppelin's live shows.
The version that made it to the album evolved out of a faster version they recorded earlier at Headley Grange, an old mansion in a remote part of England where they wrote and recorded many of their songs, including "Stairway To Heaven."
Tool covered this on their 2000 album Salival.
There is at least one Led Zeppelin tribute band called "No Quarter." (thanks, John - San Antonio, TX)
Sublime borrowed a riff from this in their song "Smoke Two Joints." The short-lasting similarities can be heard at 1:07 in "No Quarter" and at 1:09 in "Smoke Two Joints." (thanks, Matt - San Antonio, TX)

Comments:
That song is so eerie, I agree it is best heard in the dark. I love thinking about it from a Lord of the Rings point of view, thanks Steve for bringing that up. One of the best Zep songs!
- Jeanette, Irvine, CA
Great song - shows how underrated JPJ really is, shame that. And The DVD which was just a page and plant reunion, has the title of JPJ showcase song - No Quarter - JPJ wasnt even asked.
- Dale, Northamptonshire, England
This song is juat a really, really good song, and is my favourite Led Zeppelin song, after 10 Years Gone. Achilles Last Stand is my third favourite. and then ther's Kashmir, Over the Hills And Far Away, and of course Stairway to Heaven, Houses of The Holy, and very many more.
- Ashley, Moncton, Canada
the live version of this song on the song remains the same soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful. the guitar/drum duet is pure magic.
- paige, jb, AR
the live version... on "the song remains the same" was better, Plant didnt wail in the lyrics 'they choose the path were no one goes', and it makes it sound so eerie.. its great...
- nick, baton rouge, LA
and watch his facial expressions.. and his eyes.. hes really looking for something out there..
- nick, baton rouge, LA
the eerie sound i was created by using a leslie speaker. the speaker rotated inside of itself which creates the sound. used commonly with B3 hammond organs. i myself have one.
- J.T., Los Angeles, CA
the singing in this song sounds alot like " In The Light"
- Ben, ridgecrest, CA
This is one of the few songs that does bring me to tears on occasion, especially when i'm really down. The music itself is very emotional and beautifully crafted. Then again, it's probably just the drugs... (please, don't hold that against me. Spare your remarks for someone else)
- Gerald, Olathe, KS
The band Maktub has done a wonderful remake of No Quarter. Yvette, Hamtramck, MI
- Yvette, Hamtramck, MI
If you listen closely at the beginning you can hear fans cheering in the background
- Brian, Corpus Christi, TX
The best version of this is from the Earls Court concerts 1975, Jonesy had played this beautifully. This one should have be included on the DVD set released a few years back. It shops how much Zeppelin had griown to that point. This is even better than the one on either The Song Remains the Same soundtrack or unledded.
- William, Evington, VA
in reference to the earlier comment about studio covers, do u realize led zepplin did the same thing? when the levee breaks was originally done by Memphis Minnie. So dont go hating on Tool because they want to pay tribute to led zepplin by remaking one of their songs. As for puff daddy..... well i couldnt defend him with a straight face :)
- Aubrey, Raleigh, NC
There is definately a tribute band playing in Baton Rouge and the Gulf coast called "ZOSO". They are very good. The guys even look like Zep.
- Cory, Hammond, LA
My favourite song by my favourite band
- Liam, Campbell River, Canada
yep.. this song rocks. Studio is awesome but check the live version its like 10x better.
- Dave, Winnipeg, Canada
This song Amazing, What more can I say.
- Tom, Garstang, England
i composed a 20 minute version of this song by adding live performances by zep in seattle 77 and knebworth 79, and the solo from TSRTS, i have it in mp3, if any of you like this song enough email me at hellsnavy16@hotmail.com and i'll send it to you... to me this song is about warfare... i made a video with pretty gruesome stuff and this song in the background, this is one of my 3 all time fav. songs with dazed and confused and achilles last stand... who else is as innovative as led zep? :D best band ever, for sure
- Bruno, Lima, Peru
i like the version off of the "unledded" dvd. it's an acoustic one with jimmy playing a twelve string and robert singing. they're sitting by a river or something. it's really awesome....
- Ben, Adelaide, Australia
steve, that is exactly what i thought when i first saw the lyrics. great song, a little eerie, but that just adds to it.
- Spencer, South Kingstown, RI
All i have to say is if anybody can get a copy of "Legend of Eight Samurai" and you play it with led Zeppelin houses of the holy until the album stops the two actualy match up pretty much. and the scene that comes on right as No Quarter comes on matched up perfectly, a little too perfectly, but if anone can get it, its an old kung fu movie, than do it. Peace
- Travis J. Basso, Hillsdale, NJ
I agree with what you say Steve... Robert play was very influenced by the lord of the rings. this is also shown in other songs including stairway to heaven, battle of evermore, etc
- Ivan, Vancouver, Canada
Great song! I absoultly love it!
- Don, Philadelphia, PA
I know this is probably wrong, but it seems this song is about Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimili going through the path of the dead. If you look at it like that, it makes sence. "This is the path were no one goes" - no one goes down that path, because they will be killed. "They show No Quarter" - the undead don't show any mercy to those who are not the heir of the king of Gondor. Just my thoughts
- Steve, Wallingford, PA
They say "We will show you no quarter" in the movie The Last Samurai Of course that movie is not quite near the level of Zeppelin lol
- Andrew, Springfield, MO
Beautiful. And although when I was younger I liked Tool a bit I still will not support studio covers of such classics as it is too easy to butcher. Organ is the biggest part of this song and I know Tool doesn't have an organ player. I have no problem with bands covering Zeppelin in their concerts as long as they pay tribute and play it well, but studio is different.
- Sam, Nanaimo, Canada
Yeah for sure - its a great song. For anyone who's interested, its got more of those references to norse (viking) mythology which Plant was really into. "the wind of thor blowing cold" is an example of it, but they do it a lot more in the Immigrant Song with lyrics like "Valhalla I am coming" and "we come from the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow" And YES! i agree with everyone who reckons the tool version was great!
- Andrew, Brisbane, Australia
david, i tried the haunted cavern thing on my computer with my logitech 5.1s and soundblaster audegy 2, and it was sick. I had never used the EAX before becuase I thought it was crap. and yes, no quarter is the only song that sounds good with it.
- ben, boston, MA
I feel so honored: I have the klipsch ProMedia 5.1 seires speakers (http://www.klipsch.com/media/Products/398_large.jpg) and the Soundblaster Audigy Platinum soundcard. Cranking No Quarter under the "Haunted Cavern" environmental setting really makes what you find creepy into scary-as-all-hell. None of the other 1370 songs in my playlist can achieve this. If you have the means, I highly suggest trying this.
- David, Greensboro, NC
This is another one of my Zep favourites. Just like you guys say it have this haunting and mysterious sound which i LOVE! This song and its sound do in someway remind me of Kashmir, it's probably because of it's mysterious sound.
- Jens, Link?ping, Sweden
another classic zeppelin song! eerie and mysterious!
- paul, perth, Australia
Oh ya tool rules too. Man my top two favourite bands are TOOl and LED ZEPPELIN. I'd like to see a combination of the two ! Hahah. lol
- Heron, Toronto, Canada
This is a very Trippy song and i love it i think it is spirtual and roberts sounds so sexy in this laterz
- Brianna, layton, UT
Along the same lines as The Immigrant Song, but nice and mellow with awesome keyboards by Jones.
- Julian, Philadelphia, PA
A beautiful song, such haunting music and lyrics. Gives you an eerie feeling especially when you listen to it in the dark. And you are right Patrick, Tool did a very good job covering this song.
- Brian, Paoli, IN
Probably the most underated Led Zeppelin song. Covered by Tool recently(Check this version out...It is hot! ; ) )
- Patrick, Durham, NC
This, kashmir, and Achilles Last Stand are my favorite led zep songs. Tool covering this is really fitting since this song has a more prog feel to it. I recomend Tool to any one who likes LZ's more complex stuff.
- Ian, New York, NY

Where The Green Ants Dream (Werner Herzog, 1984) - too bad its not readily available!

"Open Your Eyes to the Dreams of the Green Ants - Reviewer: "wytold" -

"There is amazing beauty in the stark outback of Australia where Herzog filmed this drama. It's the simple story of Aboriginals who are trying to save their reality from the onslaught of civilization.

"Herzog turns the story into pure poetry which opens your mind to other versions of reality. All the characters he introduces are amazingly rich and complex. The are no absolute good or bad characters. Instead there is a world full of people who must act within the rules of their own particular realities.

"I'm watched it multiple times and the film always shakes my belief in the "absolute truth" of my metaphysical system. Each time I realize that perhaps my version reality is not the only possibility. This is not a bad experience, rather it opens new worlds for me to explore.

"I recommend this video for those who have an open mind. The video quality is so - so, but that only adds to the charm of the movie."

Buena Vista Social Club Presents Ibrahim Ferrer
Editorial Review - Amazon.com's Best of 1999:
Picking up where Buena Vista Social Club left off, BVSC Presents Ibrahim Ferrer soothes with the hushed romanticism of Cuba's yesteryear while boasting the talents of one of its greatest singers, Ibrahim Ferrer. Again there's an all-star lineup of musicians led by pianist Rubén González and singer Omara Portuondo creating music at the renowned Egrem studios, whose live room brings the slow lucidity and intense vigor of the Cuban classics to life. --Karen K.
