A Beautiful Mind (2001)
John Forbes Nash Jr. (Russell Crowe) was a brilliant economist [mathemetician! / note added by s] -- when his mind was clear. But life changed forever with the revelation that he was a schizophrenic. Nash's brilliance persisted amidst the anguish his mental illness caused for him and his wife (Jennifer Connolly), and 40 years after his diagnosis, he won the Nobel Prize for economics. Connolly's acting and Ron Howard's direction won Oscars, and the film was named Best Picture.
Cast: Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Paul Bettany, Adam Goldberg, Judd Hirsch, Clint Howard, Josh Lucas, Christopher Plummer, Anthony Rapp

ROOTS

Roots was a 1977 American television miniseries based on Alex Haley's work Roots: The Saga of an American Family, his critically acclaimed genealogical novel.

Roots was a ground-breaking event in U.S. television history. It received unprecedented Nielsen Ratings (with the finale still standing as the 3rd highest rated U.S. program ever [1]) and captivated American television audiences, successfully crossing racial lines and piquing the interest of families in all ethnic groups. Some viewers reportedly took the telephone off of the hook for the eight consecutive nights of the broadcast.

Apollo 13 (1995)
Unlucky Apollo flight 13 was bound for the moon when technical troubles scuttled the mission and nearly doomed the crew. Director Ron Howard expertly chronicles the smallest details of this true-life story, turning a failed scientific journey into a thrilling saga of true heroism. As lead astronaut Jim Lovell, Tom Hanks utters the now-famous line, "Houston, we've got a problem."
Cast: Tom Hanks, Gary Sinise, Kevin Bacon, Kathleen Quinlan, Bill Paxton, Ed Harris, Mary Kate Schellhardt, Tracy Reiner, Chris Ellis, David Andrews, Xander Berkeley, Marc McClure, Clint Howard, Loren Dean

Monster (2003)
Aileen Wuornos (Charlize Theron, in an Oscar-winning performance) faced difficult odds early in life, abusing drugs and becoming a prostitute (and pregnant) by the age of 13. Wuornos moved from Michigan to Florida where she continued to ply her "trade," specializing in a clientele consisting mainly of truck drivers. It was during that time that she began murdering any "John" who tried to rape her. Christina Ricci co-stars in this true story.
Cast: Charlize Theron, Christina Ricci, Bruce Dern, Scott Wilson, Lee Tergesen, Pruitt Taylor Vince, Annie Corley, Marco St. John, Bubba Baker, Marc Macaulay

i am hoping that people really start thinking. we don't want to be associated with torture do we? the US is earning itself a very bad name...

- LINK[S] OF THE DAY -

No Exceptions to the Ban on Torture
Louise Arbour writes that the absolute ban on torture, a cornerstone of the international human rights edifice, is under attack. The principle we once believed to be unassailable ˆ the inherent right to physical integrity and dignity of the person ˆ is becoming a casualty of the so-called war on terror.

Next stop Hong Kong
Danish artist Jens Galschiot is going to Hong Kong to erect 3 larger sculpture groups, all illustrating the global inequality. The sculptures will be put up in the public space in Victoria Park in Hong Kong and carried along with the demonstrations. - Thursday morning at eight o'clock we are going to Hong Kong, to make a tremendous happening during the WTO Summit. We just finished a leaflet, and we have decided to make a diary including photos, so it will be possible to follow our activities during the stay at www.aidoh.dk/WTO...We just returned from a successful happening in Belgium where we erected an eight meters high Golden Calf in front of the banks in Gent, to draw attention to their unethical investments in weapons and the military regime Burma. www.aidoh.dk/?categoryID=136
