The Fisher King (1991)
Shock-jock Jack Lucas (Jeff Bridges) becomes racked with guilt after a listener takes Jack's tirades to heart, resulting in a bloodbath at a New York City hot spot. Jack sinks into a depression, drinking himself nearly to death and sponging off his girlfriend (Oscar-winner Mercedes Ruehl). When Jack hits bottom, he's ready to end it all. Could a dotty homeless man (Robin Williams) whose wife died in the carnage be Jack's chance for redemption?
Starring: Jeff Bridges, Robin Williams, Mercedes Ruehl
Director: Terry Gilliam

Stand and Deliver (1987)
Anyone who's ever been in a classroom will be touched by this moving, mostly-true story of famed East L.A. math teacher Jaime Escalante (Edward James Olmos), who finds himself in a classroom of rebellious remedial-math students. He stuns fellow faculty members with his plans to teach AP Calculus, and even more when the mostly Hispanic teens (including Lou Diamond Phillips as Angel Guzman) overcome the odds and eventually go the distance.
Cast: Edward James Olmos, Lou Diamond Phillips, Andy Garcia, Rosanna DeSoto
Director: Ramon Menendez

ROOTS

Roots was a 1977 American television miniseries based on Alex Haley's work Roots: The Saga of an American Family, his critically acclaimed genealogical novel.

Roots was a ground-breaking event in U.S. television history. It received unprecedented Nielsen Ratings (with the finale still standing as the 3rd highest rated U.S. program ever [1]) and captivated American television audiences, successfully crossing racial lines and piquing the interest of families in all ethnic groups. Some viewers reportedly took the telephone off of the hook for the eight consecutive nights of the broadcast.
