Katrina stirs debate over huge shipping channel's fate
“When you thrust these deep channels right through the middle of wetlands, it exacerbates already serious erosion issues,” says Mark Schexnayder, special assistant for disaster relief to LSU's chancellor. “There's a lot of good that comes from (the channel). It makes it easy for boats to get to and from fishing grounds. It makes for good trade. But from an ecological perspective, it has very serious negative consequences, and now, flooding consequences.”
